When we think of paper, what usually comes to mind are printing paper, exercise books, and coated paper — ordinary converted papers we see every day. But there is another category of paper with stronger functionality and far more complex manufacturing processes: specialty paper, which has long penetrated critical fields such as finance, military industry, electronics, and aviation. Today, let us sort out the development trajectory of specialty paper, its origins, and the unique properties that distinguish it from ordinary paper.
I. Three-Tier Classification of Paper Processing: Converted Paper → Specialty Paper → Functional Paper
From the perspective of the papermaking industry's development logic, papermaking and paper converting have evolved step by step. The industry divides paper processing into three levels, though the boundaries among the three categories overlap and cannot be completely separated:
Level 1 — Basic Converted Paper: The base paper undergoes only a single, simple modification that changes merely its appearance and basic properties, with applications limited to traditional everyday scenarios. Examples include single-coated art paper (coated paper), single-color dyed paper, and embossed napkins.
Level 2 — Specialty Paper: An extension and upgraded version of converted paper, featuring deep improvements in structure, raw materials, and processing technology, offering exclusive properties that ordinary paper does not possess.
Level 3 — Functional Paper: The product of further technological upgrading of specialty paper, with an extreme focus on specific functions — the advanced form of paper processing technology.
As technology continues to iterate, the application scenarios of paper keep expanding, the range of specialty paper keeps growing, and entirely new paper grades are constantly being researched and developed.
II. The Founding Work of Specialty Paper: Carbonless Copy Paper
The world's first true specialty paper was born in 1945, developed by engineer Green of the National Cash Register Company (NCR) in the United States, and named "NCR paper" — what we now know as carbonless copy paper (in the Taiwan region of China, it is called "non-carbon duplicating paper").
This paper is virtually indistinguishable from ordinary white paper in appearance, yet it can achieve the multi-part copying effect of traditional blue carbon paper. Its greatest advantage is that it does not stain hands or clothing — clean and convenient. Once launched, it sold worldwide, and paper mills everywhere either introduced the patent or independently imitated it.
Unlike old-fashioned carbon paper, it uses no carbon-based material throughout the process, hence the formal name "carbonless copy paper." The industry classifies it as specialty paper on the basis of four core grounds:
A unique paper structure. Ordinary paper has a single-layer fiber structure; a set of carbonless copy paper consists of top (CB), middle (CFB), and bottom (CF) sheets, and each sheet has a three-layer composite structure. Such a multi-layer stacked design had never existed in traditional papermaking.
Specialized chemical raw materials. Production requires dedicated microcapsules, colorless (leuco) dyes, and color developers — exclusive chemical materials. Ordinary paper can be made with only basic additives such as rosin size and modified starch.
Higher processing difficulty. Carbonless copy paper requires multiple coating passes layered according to the different functions of each paper surface — a complex process with a high technical threshold. Most ordinary base papers require no additional coating treatment.
High-end, specialized application scenarios. It is mostly used in key industries such as finance, aerospace, electronic communications, and national defense/military industries. Traditional ordinary carbon paper only serves basic scenarios such as daily life and book printing.
Since the advent of carbonless copy paper, many previously existing converted papers have also been reclassified as specialty paper. The industry therefore generally believes that specialty paper evolved and derived from converted paper, and some professional books also call it "specialty converted paper."
III. Core Characteristics of Specialty Paper: Clearly Distinguished from Ordinary Paper
Built on an upgrade of converted-paper technology, specialty paper has overturned the public's fixed notions about paper. Although similar to ordinary paper in appearance, its performance and uses differ vastly. It integrates technologies from multiple disciplines — thermal science, electricity, optics, magnetism, chemistry, biology, and more — raising the production threshold, while offering broad application coverage and enormous industrial development potential. At present, China's specialty paper manufacturing level still has considerable room for improvement, and this is also a key direction of focus for the industry.
Three fundamental core characteristics:
Diversified raw material proportions. Ordinary paper relies only on plant fibers such as wood, bamboo, and grass. On top of plant fibers, specialty paper can incorporate non-plant fibers such as chemical fibers, mineral fibers, carbon fibers, and metal fibers, making up for the shortcomings of a single fiber and optimizing the overall quality of the paper.
Customized performance. By changing fiber raw materials, adjusting processing procedures, and adding specialized chemical additives, the paper is endowed with exclusive, specialized properties. A typical example: ordinary paper ignites easily when exposed to open flame, while flame-retardant specialty paper possesses high-temperature resistance and non-combustible properties.
Broad application coverage. Today's specialty paper has a rich variety, spanning culture/education, industry, military/technology, and daily life, with continuously surging market R&D demand.
Viewed from a full-dimension perspective, the uniqueness of specialty paper is reflected in every aspect:
Raw materials: Breaking through the limitation of plant fibers, synthetic fibers, inorganic fibers, polypropylene, polyester, and other materials can all be used, combined with a variety of specialized chemical additives;
Structure: Not just single-layer fiber interweaving — it can stack stretched films and multi-layer composite structures;
Performance: Can be customized and developed on demand, precisely matching the functions required by the application scenario;
Uses: Exclusively customized for various industries, forming a clear distinction from general-purpose ordinary paper.
The industry's exclusive labels: "Four New, Three High, Two Difficult"
This is the industry's most precise summary of specialty paper:
Four New: new raw materials, new processes, new equipment, new product categories;
Three High: high technical threshold, specialized high performance, high industrial returns;
Two Difficult: great difficulty in processing and manufacturing, and high difficulty in recycling and reuse after disposal.
Market-side unique attributes:
Extremely targeted, with narrow niche application scenarios and relatively small overall market demand. Most specialty papers are developed for the specific needs of particular industries; niche markets are easily saturated, and product popularity cycles are relatively short.
Supplementary industry controversy: Will specialty paper be "demoted" to ordinary paper?
There are two different views within the industry: some practitioners believe specialty paper is mutable — as technology becomes widespread and mass production matures, what was once specialty paper will gradually degrade into conventional converted paper. Carbonless copy paper, for example, was a top-tier specialty paper decades ago, but now, after mass production and popularization, many classification standards have placed it in the ordinary converted-paper category. Another group of industry insiders disagrees, believing there is an essential difference in the technical positioning of the two and that they should not be conflated, so as to avoid conceptual confusion and cognitive bias.
Conclusion
To sum up simply: converted paper is the basic improvement of paper, specialty paper is the targeted functional upgrade, and functional paper is the ultimate form of specialty paper technology. Starting from carbonless copy paper, the specialty paper industry, through nearly 80 years of development, has continuously introduced new paper grades suited to high-end manufacturing, scientific research/military industry, and precision industry. Compared with the mature industrial chains abroad, China's specialty paper industry still has considerable room for progress. Relying on the R&D of new materials and new processes, more specialty paper products with independent proprietary technologies are sure to emerge in the future.
